2003-2009

After the move to manufacturing in China Lava Lite struggled began to really struggle. Lava lamps were declining in popularity compared to the lava boom in the 1990’s and the poor quality control in the Chinese factories lead to numerous issues that almost put Lava Lite out of business. 2003-2009 was the lowest point for Lava Lite and put them on the edge of bankruptcy. The globes from this era are the least desirable for collectors because the formula used in the lamps more often than not has issues and are very cloudy or do not flow. Lava Lite was laser focused on targeting certain price points some major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Spencer’s were forcing upon them which made fixing these issues even more difficult. Additionally the new prevalence of knockoff lamps sometimes released by the same stores Lava Lite depended on as retail outlets ate away at Lava Lite’s market share. Despite all of this there were some very notable lamps released such as the Colossus and numerous resin lamps.

Accent

Model Number:1700
Years Available: 2003 – Current
Original MSRP: $11.99
Bulb used: T7 15W

The original Accent lamps stands a mere 10 inches tall, and has a capacity of 8 oz. They came in both lava and glitter variants. These are often hard to find in good shape since quality control was so poor, but when they do work it is novel seeing a lava lamp so small. It was very difficult to make a lava lamp in this size that worked reliably so in 2012 the Accent saw an update to instead use a 12oz globe and now stood at 11.5″.

Classic

Model Number:2100
Years Available: 2003 – Current
Original MSRP: $15.99
Bulb used: E17 25W

The 32oz lamps of the 1990’s were replaced in most stores with the new 20oz “Classic”. Collectors were not happy about the naming convention used because the community knew 32oz was always going to be the true classic. The Classic has a capacity of 20oz and measures at 15″ tall. This is the lava lamp you will almost always find at Walmart and Target.

Premier

Model Number:5200
Years Available: 2003 – Current
Original MSRP: $??
Bulb used: A15 40W

The Premier is what the Aristocrat series turned into once manufacturing was moved to China. It was one of the first lamps sold to the public that was made in China. It features the same globe size at 52oz and height at 16.3″. It removed the starlight pinholes and instead has a plan silver finish. Most Premiers in the early 2000’s featured a standard globe, but later on it began featuring ColorMax globes. Colored bases also began to appear in solid colors, metallic finishes, and color gradient finishes.

Grande

Model Number:6800
Years Available: 2003 – Current
Original MSRP: $88.95
Bulb used: R20 100W

The Grande is the Chinese re-release of the older Giant model from the 1990’s. Like the Giant it has a capacity of 250oz and is 27″ tall. They are made with thinner glass and metal to save on costs, but more or less look the same. They also have various different coil arrangements with some having a single coil and others having two coils. Instead of using a plastic cap with a worm drive clamp they feature a metal crimp on cap with a rubber seal. This is the easiest way to distinguish a Grande from a Giant.

Older Grandes produced between 2007 and 2018 are almost all in poor shape due to manufacturing issues at the time. The newer ones are mostly fine, but often arrive in poor shape due to shipping in high temperatures. It is recommended to order these when temperatures will not exceed 90F. If you are lucky enough to get a clear one it will look nice for some time, but due to the higher operating temperatures near the bulb the wax has a tendency to break down faster than most lamps. Over time these have become a favorite of collectors despite their issues due to their fair price point and excellent visuals.

Throughout the years the Grande has been released in several base colors along with almost every globe color available including Colormax globes as well as glitter globes.

The Colossus is the re-release of the very shortly lived Humongo from the 1990’s. It was originally released in 2007 as a specialty item targeting businesses for their lounges and clubs and were not marketed to collectors. This may have not gone over too well because in 2009 they were marketed towards collectors instead and were eventually discounted to $500. An amazing deal considering the value of them today. These came with an optional glass table that could be added to the lamp for an additional $50.

There were numerous problems with the Colossus launch that made it a short lived problem. The formula in them very quickly stopped flowing after only a handful of runs requiring temperature to be maxed out constantly. The included dimmers frequently died. The R95 200W bulbs stopped being manufactured. And worst of all more than a few Colossus’ have had their globes shatter due to manufacturing defects.
