The Fluorescent series is often incorrectly identified as part of the Electric series because they look very similar unless viewed up close or under a black light. Some feature a matte finish and some don’t. It is not certain why this is the case. It is also not certain how many colors were released because some are identical to the Electric series so the only way to identify them is by the box they came in.

The Giant is 27″ tall and 8.5″ in diameter. They weigh about 25 lbs. Giants can ran for extended times without overheating, but this is not advised because it greatly burns through the expected lifespan of the formula used. Giants were $299 at Spencers, some were sold at the same or higher prices at “head shops”. They were the top prize at Dave & Busters for awhile too. The glass bottle was made in Germany and filled in Chicago by hand. Due to these mostly being small batch runs with a lot of hands on assembly production of these were limited. The Giant was later replaced by the Grande model when manufacturing was moved to China.

The Icon series is a huge lineup of many different lamps all sharing one similarity; ceramic painted bases. All icons also come with a dimmer due to the high heat retention of the ceramic. Some icons came with special caps that matches the base while others came with standard caps found in the Electric series. Some were even black light reactive!

Icons came out in 3 sets. The first series were the most basic and stayed true to the lava lamp base shape. The second series mixed things up and came in many shapes ranging from Whales to Skulls. These were made by ICON under their GRAFFIX branch that made ceramic bongs and were mostly holiday themed.

Online shopping was still relatively new, but most colors were available for order directly from Lava Lite making most colors beyond a few common ones like blue liquid with white wax much harder to find. The Midnight Aristocrat was the 90’s revival of the classic 1960’s Aristocrat model.

The Midnight Century is the renewed lineup for the classic Century. If a black coat of paint worked for the Enchantress why not the Century? The Midnight Century brought the Century into the 1990’s with style quickly becoming one of the favorite models for collectors to hoard. Available in most colors although some were very hard to find in brick and mortar stores. Online shopping was still relatively new, but most colors were available for order directly from Lava Lite making most colors beyond a few common ones like blue liquid with white wax much harder to find.

These bases came in a marble finish in both red and gray. They were released as individual lamps and under the Custom Program which allowed collectors to buy bases with caps and globes separately to create their own custom combinations. Until a screenshot of a box for these lamps is discovered the name “Marble” was given to them by the community. The red marble base is typically paired with cranberry colored globe and the white marble base is typically paired with teal colored wax.

The standard line of Psychedelic Swirls feature a red, blue, green, and purple swirl pattern on a white back. Psychedelic Swirls were made using a process called “Hydro Dipping”. These models along with some others were among a line of different hydro dipped lamps. Because these are hand dipped each lamp is unique.

There are also rarer Psychedelic Swirls that look to use a mix of several colors. These are known in the collectors community as “Haze” or “Retro Haze” lamps.

In 2023 Thomas Austin discovered a Lumisource catalog featuring these lamps which shows that these were actually sold through Lumisource as limited edition “Psychedelic” model lamps. Thank you for your contribution Thomas!

The community given name of “Retro Haze” seems to be a combination of two of the color options provided by Lumisource. These may have been marketed “Psychedelic” lamps because there is a trademark for “Psychedelic Swirl”, but it may have simply been an oversight. The catalog mentions 4 models with the option of a blue, red, green, or purple globe with clear liquid. and an accompanying base with blue, red, green, or purple tones.

The starship series was one of the most iconic models of the 90’s next to the Midnight. Shaped like a rocket in 2 different colors these lamps were a very different departure from the standard lava lamp. They came in two colors silver and black with the black variation having holes in the base and the cap that let the light shine through. Since their discontinuation in 2003 a few other variations have come out, but they have been for 8oz globes which makes them undesirable to most collectors. They have become highly collectible and sell for high amounts second hand despite not being very rare. If Lava Lite were to ever re-release a 90’s icon this would be it. Hint hint…

Starhips were the only lamp you actually had to assemble yourself. Each leg was made out of casted metal that was fixed to the base using 2 hooks on the leg and a single screw.

The Wizard’s origin comes from the 1970’s Carlisle. Wizards are an evolution of the classic starlight design featuring star and moon shaped holes instead of pin holes. They came in 4 color variations. Silver, Black, Blue, and Red. The Blue and Red bases are the less common ones of the bunch. Some come with the “Lava” logo on the front and others don’t. The versions sold with glitter globes have longer caps to account for the lower fill level of glitter bottles. These caps are more desirable due to their flexibility. Glitter globes typically come with silver glitter, but there were some very rare versions that were released with multi colored glitter. These were noted with the addition of a “G” on the cap codes. These rare colors were made with different glitter that could not stand up to the solvent and most have lost their shine with age. Some other glitter colors include pink, teal, green, yellow, and orange. These colors may have come with Wizard lamps or possibly as sold as part of the Custom series where you could buy globes without a base and a cap.

Custom Program

Lava Lite introduced a program exclusive to Spencer’s Gifts where people could buy globes and bases independently. Below are the known documented bases released during the time the program was available. If you know what any of these mystery numbers are let us known at admin@lava-library.com
