The Electric series—sometimes referred to as the Elek-Trick series—was known for its wide range of bright, glossy color finishes. These bold, eye-catching designs were a direct follow-up to the lesser-known Rainbow Series from the 1980s.
Unlike the earlier Fluorescent series, which featured matte, blacklight-reactive finishes, the Electric series emphasized a high-gloss look and more saturated colors. The contrast between the two lines highlighted Lava Lite’s shift toward vibrant, modern styling in the 1990s.
Though often confused with other product lines, the Electric series stands out as one of Lava Lite’s more colorful and collectible runs from the post-Anniversary era.

Lava Lite partnered with Coca-Cola and Lyon Motion to produce three officially licensed Coca-Cola promotional lamps in the early 2000s. Each featured a 52 oz globe and was released in limited quantities.
The three models were:
- Coca-Cola Lava Lamp
- Boardin’ Bear
- Snowball
The Coca-Cola Lava Lamp and Boardin’ Bear each had a production run of 10,000 units and both featured a blue liquid with white wax combination. The Snowball model was more limited, with only 4,800 units produced, and came with a blue liquid and purple wax color combo.
These lamps are now collectible due to their limited runs and licensed branding, especially the rarer Snowball edition.

The Fluorescent series is often mistaken for part of the Electric series due to their similar appearance. At a glance, the two lines look nearly identical—especially in photographs—but the Fluorescent models were designed to react under black light, setting them apart from their glossy Electric counterparts.
Some Fluorescent models feature a matte finish, while others do not. The reason for this inconsistency is unclear. It’s also uncertain how many distinct colors were officially released, as several appear visually identical to Electric series lamps. In many cases, the only reliable way to identify a Fluorescent model is by its original packaging.
Because of this ambiguity, the Fluorescent series remains one of the harder Lava Lite lines to definitively catalog.

Hidden Rainbow / Orb

| Manufacturer: | Lava Lite |
|---|---|
| Years Made: | 2002-2004 |
| Original MSRP: | $29 |
| Bulb used: | 12V 10W MR11 Halogen |
The Hidden Rainbow is an obscure and little-known model, even among dedicated collectors. It was available online only and for a very short time, making it especially rare.
Rather than being a traditional lava lamp, it shared more in common with fiber optic lamps. It used a halogen bulb beneath a motorized color wheel, but instead of projecting light through fiber strands, it illuminated a frosted glass globe, creating a soft, shifting glow. The box label suggests it may have also been sold under the name “Orb.”
These lamps were part of Lava Lite’s early experimental products manufactured in China, during a time when the company was exploring unusual lighting concepts. After its initial run, leftover units appear to have been sold online again as unbranded mood lighting, without any Lava Lite logos or documentation.
The base design loosely resembles that of the Aristocrat or Century, but it isn’t properly shaped to hold a standard lava globe. This reinforces the idea that it was designed purely as a novelty light.

A very similar lamp, called the Lunar Rocket Lamp, was later sold by Lumisource. This has led to speculation that Lava Lite offloaded excess inventory or molds to other companies after moving production overseas.

The Giant stood 27 inches tall, measured 8.5 inches in diameter, and weighed approximately 25 pounds. It was Lava Lite’s largest U.S.-produced model and was known for its impressive presence and smooth flow.
Giant lamps could run for extended periods without overheating, but doing so significantly reduced the lifespan of the wax formula. While they were capable of long runtimes, this wasn’t recommended for preserving their performance.
Originally priced at $299 at Spencer’s, Giants were also sold at comparable or higher prices at specialty retailers and head shops. For a time, they were even offered as a top-tier prize at Dave & Buster’s.
Each lamp featured a glass bottle made in Germany, which was hand-filled in Chicago. Production was done in small batches with considerable manual labor, which limited overall availability.
The Giant was eventually discontinued and replaced by the Grande after manufacturing was moved to China. While the Grande carried on the large-lamp tradition, collectors often favor the original Giant for its quality and American-made construction.

The Icon Series is a large and varied lineup of lava lamps, all sharing one key trait: painted ceramic bases. Because ceramic retains heat more than metal or plastic, every Icon model came equipped with a dimmer switch to help regulate temperature.
Some Icons were fitted with special caps that matched the base design, while others used standard caps from the Electric series. A few models were even blacklight reactive, adding to their visual appeal.
Icons were released in three sets:
- The first series featured the most experimental designs, with bases shaped like whales, skulls, and other sculptural forms. These were likely created in collaboration with ICON’s GRAFFIX branch (known for making ceramic bongs) or designed directly by artist Scott Johnson. The exact origins are still somewhat unclear. Some bases from this line closely resemble bong designs, reinforcing the connection.
- The second series returned to a more traditional lava lamp shape, but still used ceramic construction and colorful finishes.
- The third series continued the trend, but they were mostly themed after holidays.
Overall, the Icon Series stands out as one of Lava Lite’s most creative and unusual product lines.

The Midnight Aristocrat was the 1990s revival of the classic 1960s Aristocrat model. It featured the same general shape and size with a modern matte black finish that matched the rest of the Midnight series.
It was offered in most color combinations, though only a few were commonly seen in physical retail stores. Colors like blue liquid with white wax were widespread, while others were much harder to find. Online shopping was still in its early stages, but Lava Lite made many additional color options available through direct ordering. This made some variations more accessible to those who knew where to look, but rare in store displays.

The Midnight Century was a refreshed version of the classic Century model, redesigned for the 1990s. If a black coat of paint worked for the Enchantress, Lava Lite figured it would work just as well for the Century—and it did. The Midnight Century gave the iconic lamp a bold new look and quickly became a favorite among collectors.
It was available in most color combinations, but only a few were commonly stocked in physical retail stores. Colors like blue liquid with white wax were easy to find, while others were much harder to track down. Online shopping was still in its early days, but Lava Lite offered a broader range of colors through direct order. For those who knew about it, that was the best way to get the rarer versions.

The Magma Color Fountain was a short-lived product, available for only a year or two before being pulled from shelves. It used the same fluid formula found in Wave Machines, which was designed for gentle motion—not continuous agitation by a pump.
When the fountain ran, the liquid would eventually fill with foam and bubbles, degrading the visual effect. This flaw led to the product being discontinued quickly, making it a rare and interesting footnote in Lava Lite’s lineup.

These bases were produced in a marble-style finish and came in two color variations: red and gray. They were available both as standard lamp releases and as part of Lava Lite’s Custom Program, which allowed collectors to mix and match bases, caps, and globes to create custom combinations.
The red marble base was typically paired with a cranberry-colored globe, while the gray (often referred to as white) marble base came with teal wax. While they were offered as customizable parts, these combinations were also released as complete stand-alone models.

The standard line of Psychedelic Swirls features a red, blue, green, and purple swirl pattern on a white background. These lamps were created using a process called hydro dipping, in which each base is individually hand-dipped into a film of swirling paint. As a result, no two lamps are exactly alike. The Psychedelic Swirls were part of a larger collection of hydro dipped designs released by Lava Lite.
In addition to the standard versions, there are rarer variations known in the collector community as “Haze” or “Retro Haze” lamps. These feature a more complex blend of multiple swirl colors.

In 2023, collector Thomas Austin discovered a Lumisource catalog that revealed these Haze lamps were actually sold through Lumisource as limited edition “Psychedelic” models. The catalog describes four versions, each paired with a blue, red, green, or purple globe containing clear liquid. The bases used coordinating color tones to match the globe.
The community term “Retro Haze” appears to be a combination of two of the Lumisource color options. It is possible that these lamps were marketed as “Psychedelic” due to existing trademark restrictions on the name “Psychedelic Swirl,” although it may have simply been an oversight.

Interestingly, these rare models were shipped in standard Midnight boxes with stickers applied to indicate that the box contained a different lamp inside—a subtle detail that helped preserve the uniqueness of these limited editions.
Special thanks to Thomas Austin for uncovering this missing piece of history.

The Starship series was one of the most iconic lava lamp designs of the 1990s, second only to the Midnight. With its bold rocket-inspired shape, it marked a major departure from the traditional lava lamp silhouette and quickly became a fan favorite.
Starships were released in two versions: silver and black. The black model featured small perforations in both the base and cap, allowing light to shine through for an added visual effect. The silver version had a cleaner, solid look. Both designs stood out on store shelves and remain easily recognizable today.
Production ended in 2003, and while a few smaller 8 oz versions have been released since then, they have not gained the same following. Most collectors view the smaller models as less desirable due to their size and construction. Original Starships with 32 oz globes are highly sought after and often command high resale prices—even though they are not especially rare.
Starships were also unique in that they required assembly. Each leg was made of cast metal and attached to the base using two hooks and a single screw, making it the only Lava Lite model that users had to partially assemble themselves.
If Lava Lite ever brings back a true 90s classic, the Starship would be the top pick. Hint hint.

The Silver Aristocrat was a modern reinterpretation of the classic Aristocrat model, bringing a refreshed, polished look to one of Lava Lite’s most enduring designs. With its clean silver finish, it offered a more contemporary alternative to the brass versions of earlier decades.
It was available in most color combinations, but only a handful—such as blue liquid with white wax—were commonly stocked in physical retail stores. Online shopping was still relatively new at the time, but Lava Lite offered a wider selection through direct ordering. Because of this, many of the more unique color variants were difficult to find unless purchased directly from the company.

The Silver Streak was the counterpart to the popular Midnight, offering the same 32 oz globe format but with a brushed silver aluminum base and cap. It featured a sleek, modern look that appealed to those who preferred a lighter, more industrial aesthetic.
It was available in the same color combinations as the Midnight series, including favorites like blue liquid with white wax. While it never reached the same level of popularity as the Midnight, the Silver Streak remains a clean and stylish variation that is appreciated by collectors today.

Subafilms, holder of the Yellow Submarine album rights from The Beatles, partnered with Lava Lite and Lyon Motion (later known as Vandor) to create a series of officially licensed promotional lava lamps. These lamps feature a 52 ounce globe with blue liquid and white wax, paired with a colorful base and cap decorated in a psychedelic Yellow Submarine theme.
Despite being labeled as “Collector’s” lamps, these are relatively common and show up frequently on eBay. They are often listed at high prices, but patient collectors and Beatles fans can usually find them for much less than the typical asking price with a bit of searching.

The Wizard traces its design origins back to the 1970s Carlisle model. It evolved from the classic starlight style by replacing the traditional pinholes with larger star and moon-shaped cutouts, giving it a more whimsical and decorative appearance.
Wizards were released in four base colors: silver, black, blue, and red. Of these, the blue and red variations are less commonly found. Some versions feature the “Lava” logo printed on the base, while others do not.
Glitter versions of the Wizard came with taller caps to accommodate the lower fill level of glitter globes. These extended caps are especially sought after by collectors for their flexibility and compatibility with other globe types.
Most glitter globes were filled with silver glitter, but a few rare versions were produced with multi-colored glitter. These were marked with a “G” on the cap code. The glitter used in these variants was more delicate and often degraded over time, losing its reflective quality. Known rare glitter colors include pink, teal, green, yellow, and orange.
These unique glitter globes may have been included with Wizard lamps or possibly offered through Lava Lite’s Custom Series, which allowed customers to purchase globes, caps, and bases separately.
Custom Program

Lava Lite introduced a Custom Series program exclusive to Spencer’s Gifts that allowed customers to buy globes and bases separately. This gave collectors and casual buyers the chance to create their own unique lava lamp combinations by mixing and matching different styles.
Below is a list of known and documented bases released while the program was active. Some bases are still unidentified and listed by their model numbers only.
